When Family Photos Turn Out Even Better

There are times when things don’t go as planned, actually this seems to be a common theme with photography in general. Our profession really depends on problem solving skills more than anything, whether it’s related to problem solving lighting, backgrounds, working with kids who are having a bad day or posing to make everyone look and feel comfortable, there are literally hundreds of things that could potentially throw you a curve ball and if you don’t know how to handle that kind of change…well good luck. Then, there are times when things don’t turn out as planned … they turn out even BETTER!! This was one of those photoshoots.

When we arrived at the lake we planned on photographing there were a few unplanned changes since the last time we were there looking at the location. The sun was setting in a different area at this time of year and well the lake only had about 2/3 of the water.

We didn’t realize was how amazing a dried up lake would look. It was dry, hard and safe to walk on …essentially I think it turned out to be a better background than the lake would have been alone. As a matter of fact it was so cool we decided to stay in the dry area almost the entire photoshoot.

There was even tall grass to play with too. Natures perfect backdrop made the pink and purples really pop.

The tall grass gave us something for the girls to play in (& change in) too.

We had some hair whipping fun filled with cartwheels, toe touches, and super model poses. Laughter no matter what was going on, couldn’t have happened if we were having to be careful to not get wet or fall in a lake.

The unexpected fuchsia and purple sunset topped off the photoshoot.

I’m adding this one in here even though they were just outtakes, just a reminder of the wonderful client friends we have and miss dearly in CA. We’ve been photographing these lovely ladies since the youngest was just 4 years old. It’s such a proud feeling to watch them grow older and to see them become more successful and happy each year. Sending Big Hugs to you guys!!
