Wind N Sea Beach Family Photos

Time flies when you’re a photographer – I think the first time I photographed Tamra and her kids (they were just kids back then) was in 2007…ironically at the beach. Life certainly has changed over the last 6 years and it has been a joy to watch kids become teens and love grow into this beautiful family. family photos blue gray fence La Jolla CA by www.SomeLikeItShotPhotography.com

Here is their video with even more photos from the day:

The pink bougainvillea was so stunning there was no way we could ignore it on our way down to the beach and so we had a volunteer to pose for us with the pink.

The weather was stunning at Wind N Sea beach in La Jolla, CA. A little mist but nothing like the normal fog that can consume the area at the blink of an eye.

Everyone was great! We know it isn’t easy being in high school or middle school and asked to snuggle up with your family so we really appreciated that they weren’t afraid to be close to each other.

Life at the photoshoot really wasn’t too difficult, forced to lounge in sand on a beautiful sunny day, hardly anyone else at the beach since it was a week day during the off season. Absolutely no complaints from our end. We were happy to be in the soft sand taking photos too – not many beaches like this in Seattle.

The large rocks provided some great posing props.

The only sad part was the graffiti, which we removed for the photos, it is pretty amazing how great nature can be.

Wind n Sea lived up to its name for a bit providing that fun wind blown hair look. Her hair reminded me of octopus tentacles as they flowed in the salty air.

Being the only son it was a nice moment to escape the girls and take a walk along the shore.

As a senior in high school and the oldest of the family, finding a spot all to herself just to relax and enjoy the sounds of the ocean were all we could ask for.

Our jobs wouldn’t be complete without at least one fun crazy photos and the youngest was  in the jumping mood.

The photoshoot ended with a surge – literally :) we were at the end just playing around when a wave and surprised us all…none of our equipment got wet but we certainly did from waist down. It wasn’t too bad considering the warm sun had us sweating.

When Family Photos Turn Out Even Better

There are times when things don’t go as planned, actually this seems to be a common theme with photography in general. Our profession really depends on problem solving skills more than anything, whether it’s related to problem solving lighting, backgrounds, working with kids who are having a bad day or posing to make everyone look and feel comfortable, there are literally hundreds of things that could potentially throw you a curve ball and if you don’t know how to handle that kind of change…well good luck. Then, there are times when things don’t turn out as planned … they turn out even BETTER!! This was one of those photoshoots.

When we arrived at the lake we planned on photographing there were a few unplanned changes since the last time we were there looking at the location. The sun was setting in a different area at this time of year and well the lake only had about 2/3 of the water.

We didn’t realize was how amazing a dried up lake would look. It was dry, hard and safe to walk on …essentially I think it turned out to be a better background than the lake would have been alone. As a matter of fact it was so cool we decided to stay in the dry area almost the entire photoshoot.

There was even tall grass to play with too. Natures perfect backdrop made the pink and purples really pop.

The tall grass gave us something for the girls to play in (& change in) too.

We had some hair whipping fun filled with cartwheels, toe touches, and super model poses. Laughter no matter what was going on, couldn’t have happened if we were having to be careful to not get wet or fall in a lake.

The unexpected fuchsia and purple sunset topped off the photoshoot.

I’m adding this one in here even though they were just outtakes, just a reminder of the wonderful client friends we have and miss dearly in CA. We’ve been photographing these lovely ladies since the youngest was just 4 years old. It’s such a proud feeling to watch them grow older and to see them become more successful and happy each year. Sending Big Hugs to you guys!!

A Magic Day With Sandy & Family

With a sparkling handful of floo power drifting in the fireplace we stepped into the magical flames and declared our trip to San Diego’s Balboa Park where we met with Harry Potter fans Linda, Martin and their gorgeous White Shepherd named Sandy.

Grab your butter beer and get cozy because “Relashio”, you can now enjoy the Self-Shuffling images:

We traveled to a few different areas of the magical Balboa Park on our magical photoshoot  day. Sandy was photographed with some Aconite, an ingredient in potions used to make her photos turn out beautiful.

We actually didn’t know how much of a fan the family was until they arrived, prepared with Harry Potter books, shirts and Sandy’s favorite owl toy. As far as wizardry knowledge goes, I’m pretty sure they would pass the O.W.L if given the exam. We were just Bozo’s taking photos for the day.

The Zen garden roots are always a nice photo background and hiding place too for Bowtruckles concerned by our little adventure in their territory.

With a wave of her wand Linda cast the “Aguamenti” spell so that we could have some nice water reflection photos with Sandy and the family.

We saw the Gillyweed plant floating in the reflective pond but didn’t decide to give it a try. It was clear that some koi had eaten enough to have gills the rest of they lives as they swam in and out of the reflections.

Overall it was a beautiful, happy magical day with Sandy and her family! Let this blog become a Pensieve of the wonderful time we had together!

Early Morning Schneider Family Fun

Not many families with teens or preteens can manage an early morning photoshoot as gracefully as the Schneider family did. It was just barely sunrise but you’d never know! Enjoy their video slideshow of photos:

with dogs schneider family san diego ca www.SomeLikeItShotPhotography.com

We started with a full family (furry kids too) photo in the backyard. With some patience and magic arms we managed to get a shot with the dogs. They wanted to play with us so much more than have their photos taken. I don’t blame them! That’s what backyards are for, right?

Once we let them loose they got their morning run out of the way as we snuck out the front and headed to the human only portion of our photo day.

group schneider family san diego ca www.SomeLikeItShotPhotography.com

Family photos together is super easy with such a great group. The kids even managed standing close for a sibling shot (for parents of kids this age, you know it was as close to a hug as we were going to get for a photo).

After group shots we get to be relaxed and play. There wasn’t an inch of hesitance when we asked if he could climb the tree!

Not everyone was interested in climbing, but the stairs made a nice place to pose.

The kids headed to school while we finished up our photoshoot, headshots for mom & dad. We suggest that clients wear a couple different outfits during photoshoots, for the sake of variety, it’s the best way to maximize a photoshoot… The Schneider Family has some of the most gorgeous eyes out there.

90 Years Strong, Happy, and Beautiful

Ginny isn’t 90 for a couple more months but couldn’t be a sweeter kinder more beautiful soul! We photographed her with her daughter, Marsha, and Marsha’s furry kids this summer as a preparation for Ginny’s 90th celebration.

13Ginny002_WEB

We knew these images will be seen by the many people she has connected with throughout the years from her youth and adulthood, and with a little help from Marsha we were able to get ahold of a few of her high school photos to play with. She was looking in a mirror when we took the shot, the mirror is a family heirloom, and we included this image from her youth later for a cute surprise.

13Ginny003B_WEB

Ginny’s grand-dog Bailey is definitely one of her favorite family members. They sit together quite often just soaking in the sights and sounds of the Pacific Northwest.

13Ginny069_WEB

The lush green atmosphere at Marsha’s house is relaxing and when the sun peeks through there is nothing to compare with the warm glow.

13Ginny075B_WEB

Marsha and Bailey are so happy to have Ginny over to share their day with, Bailey was all smiles as you can see.

13Ginny088_WEB

We ended the shoot hearing some of Ginny’s life stories and taking in the sights sounds and beautiful animals in and around Marsha’s home.

13Ginny123_WEB

This is Timber, he was shy but with some coaxing we got a headshot from behind the bed.

13Ginny136B_WEB

Timber & Tess kitties both came to Marsha as feral kittens and with much love they’ve made huge strides! Although we weren’t able to snuggle on them we were able to get some nice photos.

So many critters for Bailey to see, smell and track in his own yard.

13Ginny131_WEB 13Ginny134_WEB

I am not sure I have met anyone more proud of her mother than Marsha. Rightfully so, it is so very rare to find a genuinely happy person like Ginny. Happy early Birthday Ginny!!! Love, Alisha & Holland!
