Creating Your PinUp Name

How To Choose A PinUp Name

First, no matter what you decide do a quick internet search and make sure it isn’t already being used by another pinup before you tell anyone it is your pinup name. Also note, Most names are 2 parts, like the concept of a 1st name & last name or 3 parts for some.

Then, decide your approach:

Emma La France how to choose a pinup name

Emma LaFrance

Go with Sentiment; use an older family members’ perfect vintage-sounding name. This is also a fabulous way to honor someone who passed away. Some ladies have included a favorite pet’s name into their pinup name, or they include the city they were born in, the street they grew up at. Emma LaFrance used her grandma’s first name in her honor and her last name already sounded pretty pinup-y. Crys Zia Galore included part of her maiden name for fun. These kind of names are definitely like a special secret between you and your friends/family who know the meaning behind them.

Eva Mae Garnet how to pick a pinup name

Eva Mae Garnet

Let it Describe You: this is a great way to help people remember who you are, but keep in mind if you change your look often you won’t want to get stuck with a name that describes something (like your hair color) that won’t make sense in the future. Example: If you have red hair you can include different things that could describe red like red, ruby, rouge, fire, cherry, garnet etc. Sometimes going beyond English can be very helpful, this is were online translator softwares are fun to play with. If all else use a thesaurus and it doesn’t have to be just to describe something physical.

Leise Di Dulce how to choose a pinup name

Leise Di Dulce

Your Favorite Things; include something that you love in your name. For example if you’re known to love nail polish or birds choose a name that has Polly in it, if you like Chevy’s you could choose a name like Chevy Champagne. Our client Annaliese is a confectionary scientist who creates vegan candies and she went with Leise Di Dulce (dulce meaning sweets/candy in Spanish). Our client Jennifer loves pie a la mode so she decided on Jenn A LaMode for her delicious pinup name. It’s an extra bonus if you can make your name sexy and meaningful.

Mama Meg West how to choose a pinup name

Mama Meg West

A Classic Name With a Twist; if you know of a pinup or actress from the golden era who you love create a name that sounds similar but is not the same. For example Mae West is a famous actress, and pinup Mama Meg West has a similar sounding name…with a twist.

An Alliterated Name, starting each part with the same letter; Bettie Bee Bop, Lou Lou Lemondrop, Desi Devine, etc…I find a thesaurus really helps with this kind of name. You can look up words that describe you to find a synonym that will work with the letter you’re going for.

Mel Licious Intent how to choose a pinup name

Mel Licious Intent

Puns and Knee Slappers; always a hit! If there is a way you can make your name sound like a pun or spelled like a pun a lot of people will enjoy your name. For example: since the good ole 1990s AOL IM days I’ve been using the name Diva D’Lish for my pinup name (Alisha) it’s a fun pun, Lish for my name and D’Lish short for Delicious. Playing with spelling vs sound; Lynn Dee Hop in lieu of Lindy Hop for the swing dancers out there, or for someone name Andrea (Andy for short) choosing something like Ann DeVine, or Mary Connie Trary (mary contrary), Goldie Luck, Cinder Stella (this one goes out to my niece).

Rhyme & Rhythm; using two/three words that sound the same or have a poetic bounce. Dr. Seuss would have been a fantastic friend to ask for help with this kind of name. A rhyme dictionary comes in handy when trying to come up with these: Mandy Candy, Priscilla Vaud Villa, Cindy Lou Who, etc

The real golden names are ones that can incorporate more than one approach; for example start by using part of a sentimental name, and find a way to make it rhyme with alliteration.

There are pinup name generators (or search for burlesque name generator) online too but they won’t be nearly as creative or custom as you will be making up your own. If all else fails crowd source from your social media friends and ask them to help you come up with a name. You’d be surprised how fun this can be and the ideas that you never would have thought of otherwise.

Hope that helps!!! & hope we get to photograph you soon!! We do request using a pinup name for our pinup clients for when we post their photos. This helps reduce stalkers /creeps knowing your real name if that is a concern.

Sizzling Sassy Celeste PinUp

Washington summers have always been beautiful with the shimmer off of the green trees and flowers all around. In more recent years I feel like it has been getting sizzlin’ hot too and Sassy Celeste proclaimed summer pinups are no longer just for CA girls!

It all started out sweet and innocent, posing with the shiny red Chevy truck in a knee length yellow dress, we took photos in the trailer it was pulling as well.

The sweet and innocent look didn’t last long though, after all these were a surprise for her husband over seas and we were pretty sure he would be interested in some sassy photos.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Spring is here in Seattle finally! Flowers are blooming, trees have blossoms, and birds are chirping. If we’re lucky the sun even peaks out to say hello. This week the sun has decided to give us a few days of dry beauty, and I had the best intention to go up to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival today and play amongst the tulips and daffodils. The best part about ‘today’ specifically is Mt Vernon’s ‘worlds largest garage & antique sale’!

This morning I woke up, and wish I was as excited to go up north as I was yesterday. Essentially my body convinced my mind to take a day to myself and let Holland go alone. I stayed home with our dogs and here I am sharing photos from last year – because that is how far behind I am with processing personal photos (am I the only photographer who has this problem?).

Incase you’ve never been, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival happens in April each year in Mt. Vernon WA. There is a street fair, parade, giant garage sale, and flower gurus from around the world come to basque in the view of rows upon rows of tulips.

What you may not realize is that there are a lot of tulip farms that do not allow photography of any sort of their flowers. :/ Sad reality when you’ve driven up that far for photos of the beauty.

We did find a couple farms that welcome photographers if you bring their preprinted photography release. Our favorite flower farm is Roozengaarde which is where all these photos were taken.  They allow preregistered photographers to take photos; however, you still have to follow their guest rules (understandable); you have to stay on the path, not allowed to walk or stand in the rows, no picking flowers (that seems like a given but I supposed people do) … and to clarify we bought a flower in the garden store to take photos with.

Every year the Tulip Festival has a photo contest from guests photos taken of the tulips, which I find to be a little funny since no photos are allowed at many farms but Roozengaarde provides amazing views, as does the surrounding mountains and sky.

The adventure we went on last year included our friend Jessie. We each had high aspirations to buy and grow our own tulip but neither of us are flower growers and neither of our flowers/bulbs survived the first month. I will just stick with my vegetable garden from now on.

Don’t be fooled by the photos, I didn’t really wear heels in the mud the entire time. The area had so much rainfall the week before that the ground was mushy mud. The heels only came out for photos and even standing in one space with them was difficult.

I have my own Pacific Northwest Bucket List and this was a nice adventure to complete our first year back in WA State. I liked the idea of doing pin ups here and would love to convince a farm to let us have a pin up photo day amongst the flowers sometime. Until then I get to admire the photos taken in the mud on our Tulip Festival Adventure.

Thank you Roozengaarde for allowing photographers to capture the beauty you work so hard to grow!

UPDATE! We made a huge detour after a photoshoot later in the month and so I DID get to see the tulips this year. :)

Naughty Nettie D’Vine

First time pin up, Nettie D’Vine, is surely meant to be a pin up more often. She brought some sunshine to our Homemaker Pin Up and Artwork day during our 2013 West Coast Tour. After being transformed into a 50’s pin up dame, thanks to Stylist Remele Sparks,  we took her photos on a plain backdrop, which were later extracted and transformed into this fun artwork image “Smokin’ Hot Nettie D’Vine”.

We started off the portraits with a pretty in pink look, playing on the couch and later with some vinyl and cocktails. Good ole fashion fun.

It takes a special kind of sexy to make doing dishes look this good; she definitely pulled it off, and with hardly any effort needed. Nettie does catalog modeling, she certainly can get attention with the smile in her eyes alone.

It was a sunny day, so we played outside by the pool, for a cool relaxed look.

Although wearing a poker face wasn’t really her strength, it’s hard to know if she’s bluffing or not with this expression…and peeps, eyes on the cards!

We are honored to be her first pin up photographers and hope to see her continue with more pin up fun! She certainly has what it takes as a model and the many expressions a pin up should make.
